The Glasgow Centre for International Development are hosting a free public seminar on Tuesday 15 October. Professor Tim Benton, University of Leeds and UK Food Security Champion will explore issues around global food security and the major drivers at a macro level - economic and population growth and climate change. The first meeting of the Strategic Forum for Adult and Lifelong Learning was held on Thursday 3 October. It will "take forward a coherent and ambitious agreed policy in a sector that needs renewed attention" said Mike Russell, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning.
At the moment I'm at the ESREA triennial conference in Berlin. Today is the second day of the conference and it is a day full of very interesting presentations on different aspects and areas of adult learning and education.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Thomas Aneurin Smith to our food security discussion forum. Tom is a Teaching Assistant in Human Geography in the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield. In this short article Tom explores the influence of young people on current practices in agriculture, pastoralism and fishing raising interesting questions about the relationship between adults and young people and the impact of this on future food production and environmental change
Subscribers interested in the issue of access to Higher Education, may wish to know that the International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes will be running a conference on the topic of the Access Policy of Higher Education hosted by Beijing Normal University from 30 October to 2 November. Keynote speakers include the Master of Green College, Oxford University, Professor Sir David Watson.

At the 8th International Researching Work and Learning Conference, hosted by the University of Stirling last month, a new book in the Knowledge Economy and Education Book Series (Sense Publishers) was launched. Volunteer Work, Informal Learning and Social Action, edited by Fiona Duguid, Karsten Mundel and Daniel Schugurensky, explores the connections between volunteer work and informal learning in various sectors: cooperatives, social housing, voluntary organisations, social movements, and the labour market. Underlining all the case studies is the goal to work for social justice.
A number of ASEM Education and Research Hub for Lifelong Learning (the ASEM LLL Hub) partners from the ASEM Research Network 5 "Core Competences" met in Kuala Lumpur on 26th and 27th June 2013 to discuss future directions of the network in relation to two main objectives: publication and dissemination activities; and, funding opportunities. The meeting was hosted by our colleagues Dr Saemah Rahman and Dr Ruhizan Mohammad Yasin of the Faculty of Education of the National University of Malaysia - Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
