The Scholarship Framework Newsletter - March 2019

News

Welcome to the March 2019 issue of the Scholarship Framework newsletter including latest news and updates - aiming to support the development and embedding of a distinct scholarly ethos in the college HE sector.

March 2019

The Scholarship Framework's resources are now available for practitioners and colleges to access and improve their staff's scholarship and the institution's scholarly activity and applied research.

There are over 50 resources which have been organised into the following themes: Professional Development; Quality Enhancement; Student Engagement and Curriculum Development.

We look forward to feedback on the value of the resources in enhancing higher education provision, particularly on how the resources are being used in Teaching Excellence Framework submissions, meeting OfS regulatory requirements and in applications for different types of degree awarding powers.

If your college has not registered to use the framework yet, please register now.
New resources on the Scholarship Framework

For scholarship to become embedded in a college HE setting it needs to be supported by college-wide scholarship policies that can set a standard or benchmark. The Developing a College-Wide Scholarship policy resource provides a guidance on how colleges can create scholarship policies.

The Mapping Employer Engagement Resource helps institutions to map employer engagement in all subject areas, and assist teams in the Creative Industries to facilitate employer engagement in the course design process. It also contains an activity for use by students.

Research as a Form of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a resource that provides principles and supporting documents for implementing a staff development scheme that allows staff to undertake research as a form of CPD.
Building a Community of Practice

As well as having a range of resources, the Scholarship Framework contains a forum where college HE practitioners can engage with the community to share thoughts by submitting a think piece, provide a case study to share best practice ideas and hear news on the latest events and hot topics.

Looking at
challenges of teaching and working in college higher education, Eve Rapley, teaching fellow at the University of Huddersfield, University of Hertfordshire and Imperial College, London revisits research and scholarship in college higher education in her think piece, by focusing on the role and responsibilities of university partners.

Gail Hall also looks at the contribution of Twitter in creating a healthy professional development environment in her recent think piece.
Education Development Initiative of the Year Award

The Scholarship Project was recently shortlisted for the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) Initiative of the Year Award. From 11 strong applications, the Scholarship Project made the shortlist of four and a team of Scholarship Development Managers, Gail Hall, Jacky Brewer, Sarah-Jane Crowson and Phil Miller attended the SEDA annual conference in November 2018 to deliver a presentation to conference delegates and a judging panel.

The team had to demonstrate how the project met the judging criteria and also that it had made a practical and theoretical contribution to teaching, learning and assessment. They also had to prove the project had a positive impact on the staff/student experience was sustainable, has potential for further development and its ideas and approaches could be transferred to other institutions.

Being nominated for a SEDA award was a hugely rewarding experience. To be a runner-up and to receive such positive support for the framework from the educational development community was fantastic.
