UNESCO Learning City Award 2019 open for applications

The application process for the UNESCO Learning City Award 2019 is now open. UNESCO GNLC member cities wishing to apply for the award should submit their applications no later than 30 September 2018. Learn more about the call for applications here

2019 International Conference on Learning Cities: Applications to host the fourth International Conference on Learning Cities are now being accepted. Member cities can submit their applications by 31 August 2018. Learn more here.

New UIL Director: The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) welcomed a new Director, Mr David Atchoarena, in April 2018. Read more.

Learning cities and Education for Sustainable Development: The UNESCO Global Action Programme on ESD ends in 2019. To determine a future direction, over 80 GAP key partners, including the UNESCO GNLC, came together in San José, Costa Rica, from 25 to 27 April 2018. Read more.

Learning cities event at UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development: An event entitled ‘Learning cities: Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies through education’ looked at the intersection of SDG 4 (inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all) and SDGs 11 and 12 (sustainable production and consumption). Learning Cities in Action

Learning to live sustainably in cities: Implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in learning cities: The UNESCO GNLC co-organized a training event in Aswan, Egypt, from 5 to 7 March 2018. 'Learning to live sustainably in cities: Implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in learning cities' was the topic of the meeting that counted around 50 delegates from more than 15 countries from the Arab States region. Training workshop in Puebla, Mexico: A training workshop in Puebla, Mexico, from 30 January to 2 February 2018 saw around 150 participants, including city mayors and education officers, come together to discuss the learning city concept and discover how to foster dialogue and implement actions to promote lifelong learning. Germany: Gelsenkirchen has complemented the second phase of its national 'City of the Future' competition, which promotes the learning city concept. More information on recent activities in this regard can be found here and here.

Ireland: Cork and Limerick co-organized an international seminar on equitable and inclusive learning regions on 21 March 2018 in Limerick. Read more.

Qatar: Al Wakra presents its activities at the International Experts' Meeting on TVET for Sustainable and Inclusive Development from 17 to 19 April 2018 in Doha, Qatar. Learn more here and here.

Republic of Korea: Suwon paid a visit to the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) to discuss how the city can engage in strengthening the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities and its activities ion 28 June 2018. Read more.
