On 19 May 2021, with the adoption of the Berlin Declaration for Sustainable Development (ESD), participants at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD committed to promoting its integration at all levels of education. The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) will support UNESCO Member States in their efforts to turn this commitment into reality.

IN FOCUS: UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development
Lifelong learning is key to solving global challenges and is therefore integral to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In many parts of the world, however, ESD is still predominantly taught in formal education and schooling and not in the wider community. To address this, UIL hosted a virtual session on 19 May 2021, ‘ESD in lifelong learning’, as part of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development.

On 21 and 22 April 2021, UIL brought together representatives of six UNESCO Member States – Cambodia, Kenya, Namibia, the People’s Republic of China, the Philippines and Viet Nam – to discuss the development of education systems from a lifelong learning perspective.

Literacy and basic skills
Case study: Greek Language School educates immigrants, refugees, the repatriated, and other foreigners
The Greek Language School of the Municipality of Neapolis-Sykeon was established in 2009 in an effort to promote literacy development, personal and social empowerment, and lifelong learning among immigrant communities. Since then, it has provided a Modern Greek language curriculum for adult immigrants.

UIL is calling for applications for the UNESCO Learning City Award 2021. The award recognizes impactful, creative and innovative lifelong learning strategies and practices at urban level. All 229 members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) are invited to apply by 25 June 2021.
