The pessimism on the super-aged society that has developed across the country in Japan for around 30 years has finally begun to dissipate and has found symbolic expression as “the era of the 100-year life”.

We are already moving from the past industrial society to the next new society. In this new society, people live in a diversified and shrinking society based on uniqueness and relationships. Its concrete practice is an attempt to confirm the creation of countless “small societies” where people exercising their own agency become the leading actors.

What we see in various practices in local communities is the “movement” where people create and renew the self through interactions with others. There, the “small society” is reconstituted continuously, creating overlapping multiple layers. People move freely between these layers, creating a more diverse “society”.

There, the process of creating “society” is through “learning”, and the process of “learning” is also recreating “society” itself. Only through this dialectic will social trust emerge. People will trust each other through the “movement” of “learning”; “society” will continue to evolve, and people will continue to dynamically construct their own existence. Thus, people’s existence itself is embodied in “learning” and “society”.

Educational Peacebuilding in Medellin and Acapulco: Understanding the role of education, culture and learning in responding to crises

This project funded within by the British Academy through the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy via the Global Challenges Research Fund from March 2020 to December 2021 seeks to create a detailed understanding of the infrastructure, engagement, resources and policies required to educationally transform a community in order to contribute to reducing the negative impacts of drug-related violence and crime. It aims to investigate the circumstances, policies and practices through which Medellin (Colombia) was able to develop and implement an inclusive, lifelong, learning strategy that contributed to the successful reduction in drug-related violence and crime and, through participative methods, to transfer that learning to Acapulco (Mexico). By working alongside politicians, community members, young people and stakeholders in both Medellin and Acapulco, recommendations for responding to crises of violence will be developed. The innovative, participatory methodology will focus on informal education, producing an educational peacebuilding model and index for transferability, trialing concepts in the creation of a vision for ‘The Acapulco we want’, along with an implementation framework to create future positive learning opportunities.

AAACE 2020 Annual Conference - Registration Now Open

The current state of social engagement, public and private, in our society, requires urgent attention. An observation of the discourse around us results in three apparent issues. First, it is easy to see our dialogue as divisive wherein the voicing of personal opinions is seen as an attack rather than an opportunity for debate or dialogue. Second, the expression of differing values creates enemies of the “right” and “wrong” person rather than opportunities for mutual respect. Third, and perhaps the most important, is the general lack of discourse itself.
