PROVIDE News & Online Survey

The EU project PROVIDE (PROmoting the Validation of Informal and non-formal learning and the Development of key competences for professionals in vocational Education) aims at developing and piloting a learning approach for educational professionals in vocational education and training (VET) to promote and validate the development of their professional key competences.

Muir Houston helps Romania celebrate Lifelong Learning Day

I was recently invited to attend Lifelong Learning Day (26th April 2014), part of the University of Bucharest’s 150th anniversary celebrations in Bucharest, Romania. This was then followed by the 4th International Conference on Adult Education: "Adult Education in Universities. Local and Regional Perspectives" (27th – 30th April 2014) held at Iasi, Romania.

A full programme was put on for Lifelong Learning Day by our hosts at the University of Bucharest including Professor Romita Iucu and Associate Professor Catalina Ulrich. Adrinks reception was held on the Friday evening for networking and introductions for attendees at the lifelong learning event.

On the Saturday, Honorary Professorships were conferred upon Professor Heribert Hinzen (Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association IIZ/DVV) and Professor James Pappas, Vice-President of Oklahoma Outreach. An interesting and thought-provoking roundtable discussion was held on "University and Lifelong Learning", taking stock and looking ahead.

In the evening our hosts had arranged for us to visit the Ballet at the Opera National to see a performance of Corsarul and it was certainly an interesting spectacle.

Sunday the 27th saw us move to Iasi, in Moldova, for the 4th International Conference on Adult Education hosted by the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi.  A full programme was delivered and there was a diverse range of presentations and large variety of international contributors. I delivered a presentation on two EU funded projects we have been involved in (THEMP and LETAE) and was also invited to be a panellist on a number of roundtables and discussions on: Universities’ support in building strong learning communities and regions; Adult Education in Universities; and, International Doctoral programs - creating synergies.

In addition, one of our CR&DALL and PASCAL colleagues, Professor Chris Duke (above left, with Muir Houston) was inducted to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. Also honoured at the event was a former colleague Professor John Field.

Revision of the UNESCO Recommendation on the 1976 Development of Adult Education

UNESCO’s General Conference agreed in 2013 to prepare this revision “in consultation with the Member States and other stakeholders through various cost-effective measures”.

Keeping young people in (vocational) education: what works?

Early findings of a Europe-wide Cedefop study of the effect of vocational education and training (VET) on the dropout rate reveal that this effect is largely positive. In countries where vocational pathways account for a large share of education and training, rates of early school leaving are below the EU target for 2020 (10%). Conversely, in countries where VET lags behind, the dropout rate is higher than 10%; in some cases, significantly so.

European policies: catalysts for innovation and youth employment

In vocational training, but also for general economic growth needed for employment, European policies are catalysts for innovation, according to Cedefop Director James Calleja.

Mr Calleja was a key panellist during the 3rd international conference on industrial technologies research and innovation, held in Athens from 9 to 11 April. The conference attracted over 1 000 delegates from 50 countries as well as 150 speakers in plenary and workshop sessions.

Partnerships key to preventing skills mismatch and NEETs

Partnerships between education and training and social partners are not an option but inevitable to prevent skills mismatch and having people not in employment, education or training (NEETs), argued Cedefop Director James Calleja at the Greek EU Presidency’s flagship conference on vocational education and training (VET).

The conference, held on 26 March in Athens, gave participating Member States an opportunity to get acquainted with successful VET policies and practices which tackle skills mismatches, focusing on how work-based learning can meet contemporary challenges.
