The Rise and Fall of Islamic Learning Cities | A Leverhulme lecture from Professor Nematollah Azizi

Throughout Islamic history, various cities have served as flourishing centres of learning, contributing significantly to intellectual, scientific, and cultural advancements. While the historical periods of peak intellectual activity may have passed and traditional centres of Islamic learning faced challenges and declines, efforts are ongoing to revitalize and preserve the rich intellectual heritage of these cities.

Gendered Journeys Team Retreat

The Gendered Journeys project is an interdisciplinary, international mixed-methods project that explored gendered inequalities in India, Rwanda, and the UK using online surveys, interviews, and eco-mapping techniques to address persistent and growing gender gaps in STEM study and working, particularly in global south contexts. This Bulletin grew out of the conversations within the PIMA Bulletin Number 48, January 2023 January 2023 Bulletin TOC | PIMA Network where we began to (re)envision relations between humans and the more-than-human world from different vantage points.

European Access Network Conference 2024 (EAN2024)

Abertay University is delighted to announce a partnership with SCAPP (Scotland’s Community of Access and Participation Practitioners). SCAPP provides a practitioners’ network to support the development and professionalisation of a strong widening access and participation community in Scotland and by doing this embed, enhance and support effective practice. SCAPP encourages and coordinates the sharing of best practice and policy developments that impacts students from underrepresented backgrounds in tertiary education.

On Thursday, 19th October 2023, Swansea University hosted a Leverhulme Lecture titled “Pedagogical Capabilities in Islam to Create, Maintain and Develop Justice-oriented Learning Cities”. The lecture was presented by Nematollah Azizi, a Leverhulme Professor at the University of Glasgow and a faculty member at the University of Kurdistan in Iran. This visit was organized by Swansea University, along the International PASCAL Observatory collaboration, where Swansea Learning City and Swansea University are active members and were happy to host Professor Azizi as their guest from their partner University of Glasgow.  The lecture by Professor Azizi aimed to explore the role of Islamic pedagogical capabilities in creating and maintaining justice-oriented learning cities.

The first ever Seminar in Global Adult Education by the UNESCO Chair in Global Adult Education of the Department of Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education was successfully held on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 November, 2023.  There were presentations from Canada, Italy, Kenya, Palestine and Spain/Catalonia.
