Studying Adult Education at the University of Glasgow

Adult Education is offered in various ways. The School of Education within the College of Social Sciences not only offers Masters degrees in adult education, but also even more advanced opportunities with many doctoral students in PhD and EdD programmes specialising in the field. It also offers related undergraduate and Masters provision in Community Development. The School also runs an extensive public programme of Certificates and Diplomas in Adult and Continuing Education and an Open Programme to some 8000 enrolees from the city of Glasgow and beyond, making the university one of the largest providers of adult education in Europe. It also offers an Access programme providing opportunities annually for some 250 adults with non-traditional qualifications to enter undergraduate courses.

The School of Education

The School of Education through its research cluster in Social Justice, Place and Lifelong Education hosts two major research entities in the field, the PASCAL Observatory on Place Management, Social Capital and Learning Regions and Centre for Research and Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning (CRADALL). These centres in turn are engaged in extensive funded research and offer a broad programme of seminars and conferences. Some 25+ academics specialise in the field of post-compulsory education.

Our strengths are in the domain of lifelong learning, adult education and social justice relate to the following areas:  Citizenship; Civil Society; Community-based Learning; Learning Cities and Regions; Literacy; Pedagogy; Poverty and International Development; Widening Participation.

We are strongly linked internationally not only to specialist groups in Universitas 21, but also to many international organisations such as UNESCO’s Institute for Lifelong Learning and the Asia Europe Meeting Hub for Lifelong Learning.  We have conducted many projects funded by the European Commission, including within its Grundtwig programme for Adult Education. In Scotland we have worked with and for many bodies including Skills Development Scotland, the Scottish Qualifications Authority, the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament. Our strong links with many prestigious universities internationally provide for students many opportunities to access the best knowledge available, and furthermore possibilities for exchange and study visits.
