Adult Learning Australia | Adult Learners Week - 1-8 Sept, 2020

Adult Learners Week is celebrated at the beginning of Spring with hundreds of events and activities promoting the benefits of learning. There are so many opportunities to learn available across Australia.

Adult Learners Week is a UNESCO initiative supported in Australia by the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training and coordinated by Adult Learning Australia. Adult Learners Week runs from 1–8 September and incorporates International Literacy Day, which is celebrated annually on September 8.

Adult Learners Week in Australia is part of an international festival of adult learning.

The move to create a broad celebration of adult learning began with the American Association for the Advancement of Education (AAAE) in the late 1980s. In 1990, governments met in Jomtien for the Education for All world conference. The aim of this conference was to set goals for:

  • universal access to and completion of primary education
  • reducing the adult illiteracy rate to one half its 1990 level by 2000.

Adult Learners Week 2020 – celebrating 25 years

Adult education is more important than ever!

Right now many adult Australians are experiencing difficult times and challenges. As education providers, you know that learning transforms people – it offers a life line and opportunities for renewal.

That's why we are so excited to announce this year's theme:

‘Renew You’

Our theme is all about the positive impact of learning (upskilling or whatever you want to call it). It's about how education can help people navigate tricky times – both socially and economically.

Help us make a difference

People need access to education, learning and training at every stage of their lives so they can build skills and knowledge, fulfil their own potential and contribute effectively in their communities.

Adult Learners Week is all about promoting these ideas and highlighting the awesome work of the adult education sector.

Supporting adult learners

There are 3 x $1000 #ALW2020 scholarships for outstanding adult learners to enable them to continue learning either by taking a new learning pathway or continuing on an existing one.

We’re inviting adult education providers around Australia to nominate adult learners whose commitment and motivation makes them stand out from the rest. We’re looking for adults for whom learning has made a big difference in their lives.

We had amazing scholarship entrants last year. Plus, it's so easy to nominate your adult learners, so get your applications in.

Resources and downloads

Adult Learning Australia will be coordinating an #ALW2020 national media strategy. Plus there are heaps of resources available on the ALW website so you can brand your #ALW2020 events. Check them out here. The new ALW posters and bookmarks will be forwarded to you in the coming weeks so keep an eye out for them. We have also included some resources for running events during COVID restrictions.

Help us support adults across Australia who need access to quality education opportunities during #ALW2020

The real success of Adult Learners Week comes down to your involvement. You can help by registering and running fantastic ALW events in your communities using the ALW resources. We will be doing everything we can on a national level to promote the Week.

After you register your event/s remember to share it on social media using the hashtag #ALW2020 #RenewYou. We will be doing the same on the ALW Facebook page.
