Neoliberalism has been widely criticised because of its role in prioritising ‘free markets’ as the optimum way of solving problems and organising society. In the field of education, this leads to an emphasis on the knowledge economy that can reduce both persons and education to economic actors and be detrimental to wider social and ethical goals.

On YouTube the vlog channel "Aging for Beginners" has launched. Populations are aging, our customers are aging, we all in person are in the process of aging, but the acquisition of knowledge about normal aging is still based on a trial and error method. The professional ager Tiina Tambaum shows in her vlogs what are the needs of normally ageing persons, and together with the successful ager Ants Värnik they discuss age-related things.

Community-based adult education is an important component working towards a system of lifelong learning. Institutions of education, training and learning change in many respects in the age of globalization and digitalization. But in as much as we believe in the importance of kindergarten, schools, vocational and higher education and struggle to support them as institutions, adult education also needs an institutional back-up.

Adult Learning Australia (ALA) has declared 2018 to be a Year of Lifelong Learning. This raises many questions about why Lifelong Learning should be a priority. How might policy to promote Lifelong Learning develop? Are there particular outcomes which should be anticipated from a year focused on lifelong learning? How to get the various stakeholders for formal, non-formal and informal learning across various age levels to work together to promote a more coherent and engaged framework for all people to see themselves on a lifelong learning journey?

Professor Peter Jarvis - 80th Birthday

Three former professors of adult education, and the current chair, from the University of Glasgow were amongst some 100 friends and colleagues who celebrated the 80th birthday of Professor Peter Jarvis, the eminent adult educator, known to all in the field. Professor Lalage Bown, Emeritus Professor of Adult Education at Glasgow eloquently spoke of his contributions especially in the international sphere.

JOINT SEMINAR - "Learning in later life: Concepts, exemplars and contemporary issues"

We are happy to announce the continuation of our collaboration with the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Strathclyde through a joint seminar to be given by Professor Brian Findsen of the University of Waikato, New Zealand (and a weel-kent face in Glasgow, being former Head of DACE at the University of Glasgow). Brian's seminar will take place on the 22nd of August and full details of location and time are given on the attached flyer.
