Seminar Series:

The presentation reports on the study supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research grant N 17-3601125 “Functional Literacy of Highly Qualified Scientific and Pedagogical Personnel in Russia and the UK: Outcomes of the International Comparative Study”.

The two presenters will summarize the findings of their desk research on literacy/functional literacy/functional illiteracy and country- specific challenges as follows:

  • Is the term functional literacy applicable to the sphere of the First Stage Researchers development?
  • Is functional literacy implicitly manifested in the national curriculum for Doctoral Studies and educational policy documents?
  • Is it possible to make judgements on the level of functional literacy on the basis of certain instrumental criteria?

They will also share comparative data obtained within an internet-based functional literacy survey and in-depth interviews with Doctoral Students (Education only)  at Southern Federal University and  Glasgow University to demonstrate how the data could be potentially valuable to identify the key issues and opportunities for personal and institutional growth. The presenters invite the participants to share their opinions and hope that the findings can trigger further comparative research studies at an international level.
