How British Community Educators construct professional jurisdiction - PhD of Ye Xiaohan at ECNU

We are very pleased to report that our former MSc student, Ye Xiaohan, has successfully defended her PhD thesis at the Institute of Vocational and Adult Education, East China Normal University in Shanghai. Her topic concerned how British community educators construct professional jurisdiction.  Congratulations to her.

She mainly focused on Scotland as an example. Using Andrew Abbot’s system of professions, she applied the concept of jurisdiction to analyse the making of the profession. The research explores in the context of historical dynamics and socio-cultural changes how the connections between community educators and their specific work are established in the UK based on the connotation of professional jurisdiction. She explains the process of the profession obtaining cultural and social legitimacy.

This outcome we hope strengthens our existing links with East China Normal University, including within the aegis of the ASEM Lifelong Learning Hub.
