Recognition Culture in Higher Education. International Perspectives on Lifelong Learning and Student

The conference took place in the Gustav Stresemann Institute in Bonn on 11 and 12 December 2023, organized by the German Rectors´ Conference. It is part of the project  MODUS – Enhancing student mobility across educational boundaries through recognition.

It was a good mixture of panel discussions, presentations in the plenary or in parallel forums - and sufficient time for Q&A. Most of the participants came from universities in Germany and Europe, but also beyond. A panel on the Ukraine combined on-line and on-site participants. Examples touched on experiences with the recognition of prior learning, academic continuing education, quality-assured recognition of microcredentials.

There were two keynotes: Peter Wells from UNESCO presented The mobility and recognition parallax: perspectives from beyond Bologna borders. Professor Maria Slowey from Dublin City University spoke on Higher education and lifelong learning: remaining more rhetoric than reality? She touched on the weak recognition of adult learning and education (ALE).

A good overview on the challenges and chances of greater student mobility is provided in the attached MODUS publication by Michaela Martin on Flexible Learning Pathways in Higher Education Good Practices from an IIEP-UNESCO International Research.
