The present research project (2018 onward) is a collaborative partnership model between the University of Glasgow and the social enterprise Food Train (FT), delivering the objectives required by the Eat Well Age Well project, in terms of a large-scale survey of older adults’ nutritional needs, complemented by smaller scale in-depth qualitative research, using a mixed-methodology.
One of the primary strands of the EWAW project is research and evaluation of malnutrition and dehydration in the existing client base of FT, and this study works in tandem with FT, layering wellbeing and mental health into the data collection.
FT is a registered Scottish charity, volunteer organisation, and social enterprise started in 1995 by older people for older people. Providing 5 critical services for house bound adults over the age of 65, such as weekly grocery shopping and befriending and meal sharing service. FT meets the needs of clients in 7 local authority areas and serves roughly 2800 people in and around Glasgow and Dumfries, a number that continues to grow due to the difficulties faced with Covid-19.
Therefore, we are honoured to be able to support FT services with survey, interview and secondary data evidence of their effectiveness in mitigating food insecurity and social isolation in older adults in regions of Scotland.
