Summary biography:
Penny Enslin is Professor of Education. Her main areas of research interest are: education for democratic citizenship; gender and education; liberalism; higher education; deliberative democracy; cosmopolitanism; peace education; social justice. Her central intellectual project is a defence of liberal autonomy as a key aim of education. Her teaching and research interests lie in the tradition of analytic philosophy of education, with a particular interest in normative political philosophy.

- defending liberal theory against attacks from Marxism, Fundamental Pedagogics (the brand of theorizing that was promoted mainly in the Afrikaans medium universities in South Africa under apartheid, and whose effects linger still in educational discourse in that country), postmodernism, and those multiculturalists and Africanists who oppose liberalism;
