One should applaud the University of Malta UNESCO Chair on Global Adult Education and the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) that they took up the initiative to bring CONVERGENCE - AN INTERNATIONAL ADULT EDUCATION JOURNAL back to life in 2022. It had been published ever since the late 1960s, and stopped for about a decade.
We are very pleased that CR&DALL core members, Professor Srabani Maitra and Dr Barbara Read will both be keynote speakers at conference, Reimagining the Contemporary in Indian Education, at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM-C) in Kolkata from 21-23 April 2023. The conference celebrates the work of the ERSC-funded Gendered Journeys project, and includes some of the leading and highly esteemed education scholars from India.
CR&DALL was very pleased to be able to support the 7th GLOBAL FORUM FOR ATLVs on Health Education for All, held in Alexandria and online from March 7-9, 2023. It was represented by Yulia Nesterova, whose presentation was entitled The importance of learning cities and whole-community approach to supporting chronically ill people and their families.
The Next CR&DALL seminar will be held on 31st January at 1600 in Room 234, St Andrew’s Building, School of Education, University of Glasgow, 11 Eldon St, Glasgow G3 6NH. It is with great pleasure that we report that Professor Budd Hall has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of 'his contributions as a pioneer in the field of Community-based research, and for his advancement of knowledge building and research capacity around the world'. This award is administered on behalf of the sovereign, King Charles III, by the Governor-General of Canada and is how the country 'honours people who make extraordinary contributions to the nation'.
We are very pleased to announce that publication of a new book, Peacebuilding, Conflict and Community Development, co-edited by CR&DALL core member, Sinead Gormally. It was launched on 12 December 2022 in Belfast at an event hosted by the Social Change Initiative.
We are very pleased to announce that Nematollah Azizi from the University of Kurdistan, Iran, has been appointed as Leverhulme Visiting Professor within the School of Education at the University of Glasgow, hosted within CR&DALL. We are most grateful to the Leverhulme Trust for funding this position from January 2023 for 12 months, and very much look forward to Nematollah's stay with us. He was previously a collaborator in our British Academy, Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF)- funded project, Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Asia and Africa (SUEUAA).
This project has been brought to CR&DALL by Anna Wilson, who recently joined us from the University of Stirling. Two interconnected, mutually exacerbating global trends are putting an ever-increasing number of people at risk of environmental hazards or disasters: the climate crisis and increasing urbanization.
An international conference took place in Chisinau, Moldova on 9-10 November 2022 on the role of ALE in the development of local communities with extensive participation from Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo and the Ukraine. It was part of the DVV International Regional Project for Eastern Neighbours and jointly organized with the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA). In addition to the countries mentioned above there were interesting case studies also from Germany, Greece and Sweden as well as the European Training Foundation (ETF).
