How do we teach adults to read and write? Seminar by Diane Gardner

On 31 March, Diane Gardner, Senior Lecturer at the City of Glasgow College, conducted a workshop at the University of Glasgow. Diane outlined her system of synethetic phonics, based on the critical pedagogy of Paulo Freire, that she uses in her teaching practice.  She is currently in working in partnership with the BBC Skillswise programme.

The lively and informative workshop was well attended by literacy practitioners, graduate students and faculty.

A recent process of international consultation have come to a phase for UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) to provide a Draft text of a New Recommendation on the Development of Adult Education to follow the very well-known 1976 Nairobi Recommendation.

How do we teach adults to read and write therefore improving their life chances?

This hands-on seminar will be delivered by City of Glasgow College Adult Literacy and Community Senior Lecturer, Diane Gardner who will highlight how a synthetic phonics based reading and writing scheme can help native English speaking adults and those from an ESOL background learn to read.

City of Glasgow College are now in partnership with BBC Learning’s Skillswise to further develop phonics as a learning tool by creating suitable and relevant resources to help reduce the number of those who cannot read or write in the UK today.

An Introduction to the Behavioural Research Centre for Adult Skills and Knowledge (ASK)

Following our recent visit to meet colleagues in CR&DALL, I have been asked to provide some information on Behavioural Research Centre for Adult Skills and Knowledge (ASK).  In March 2014, the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) and the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) jointly set up the Centre.

Financial Literacy Amongst Older Scots

Professor David Bell (University of Stirling) and Professor Robert E. Wright (University of Strathclyde) have received a £320K grant from the Nuffield Foundation in order to fund empirical research into the determinants of financial literacy amongst older people.
