Professional Practice in Higher Education MEd

Introduction

The MEd in Professional Practice in Higher Education (MEd PPHE) is a part time distance learning Masters programme. The MEd PPHE programme is aimed at teachers and lecturers in higher education and participants would be expected to complete either the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE) as the first 60 credits of the MEd programme or University of Glasgow staff would complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) as the first 60 credits of the MEd programme. Individuals with an equivalent PG Certificate qualification from another university may be eligible to join the MEd PPHE from Course 4 onwards.

The MEd PPHE is taught part-time and mainly at a distance (apart from one week of face-to-face teaching in Glasgow at the start of the PGCTHE). The PGCTHE is completed over one year part time and to complete the rest of the MEd PPHE takes an additional two years part time study. The aims and intended learning outcomes for the MEd PPHE provide an overview of the programme.


Structure of the MEd PPHE

Year 1 (Courses 1-3 comprise the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education - PGCTHE)

Year 2 (Courses 1-6 comprise the MEd in PPHE)

Year 3 (Courses 1-7 comprise the MEd PPHE)

Entry requirements

You must be teaching in higher education during completion of the first year of the MEd programme. This is because the assessed work in the PGCTHE requires you to have your teaching observed by a peer and to evaluate your own teaching practice. As part of the application process please complete the attached personal statement which requests details of your current teaching commitments. You would normally be expected to hold an upper-second honours degree or equivalent. For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum level of English language proficiency for entry into programmes.

UK Higher Education Academy Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the PGCTHE or PGCAP will be eligible to become Fellows of the UK Higher Education Academy.

Additional Information

As most of this programme is taught online, you will need a good internet connection. In terms of the operating system for your computer, we recommend at least Windows 2000 or a version of Mac OSX. An up-to-date web browser such as FireFox 3 would also be important. You will also need some basic computing skills before starting the programme. As a minimum you would need experience of using the internet, sending emails and word processing. In week one of our programme we will offer training in how to use the virtual learning environment for our course (Moodle).

Advanced Community Development MSc (from 2013/14 onwards)

Introduction

This completely distance learning programme responds to the increasing use of a Community Development approach to dealing with a wide range of social, economic and environmental issues worldwide and the resultant requirement for high level education for experienced practitioners in these fields. It focuses on global approaches to Community Development utilising an extensive network of international relationships.

It has been developed in consultation and collaboration with the International Association for Community Development (IACD) of which core staff are Board members. Embedding the program within their extensive global networks will ensure that the program remains relevant to the field and that a high-level of experienced practitioners are identified and recruited onto the programme. This provides an on-going context for their support and development and a unique opportunity for students to participate in global learning events that run in parallel with the IACD conferences. This will enhance the students' understanding of the global context of Community Development through receiving input from seniormembers of the IACD. In addition, it will enhance their ability to develop their career, to move into areas of greater responsibility and more strategically focused employment, and will increase their ability to compete for posts in an international arena.

Who is the programme for?

This programme has been developed for experienced Community Development practitioners working in NGOs, Community-based Organisations, National and Local Government and related fields throughout the world who want to develop their thinking and practice in the light of global models and contemporary theories of Community Development.

What will you get from this programme?

This programme will enable experienced practitioners to build on and develop their analytical tools and conceptual frameworks in order to understand the various contexts and changing environments where social action takes place. All of this takes place in the context of dialogue and sharing of practice with fellow workers from across the world within a sophisticated interactive electronic platform. It encourages critical reflection on Community Development practice from a wide range of theoretical perspectives and international contexts.

It also enables students to apply rigorous research methodologies to the study and practice of Community Development

In addition, it will enhance their ability to develop their career and to move into areas of greater responsibility and more strategically focused and will increase their ability to compete for posts in an international arena.

Teaching Adults MSc

Introduction

The MSc/PgDip in Teaching Adults provides a strong grounding in the practices used in teaching adults, as well as an opportunity to conduct a practice-related research project.

  • The programme is open to people with little or no experience in teaching adults, but also works well for those with more knowledge of the field. This is because the programme combines a good background in the theories and history of teaching adults with a substantial placement component.
  • The placement allows you to work with an adult education agency for 100 hours, and counts as two courses in the programme. You can choose your own type of organisation for your placement, and we will help to set it up.
  • Students tell us that they come out of the programme with much stronger knowledge of teaching adults as well as a better understanding of what that means to their teaching practice.

Programme overview

  • MSc: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time
  • PgDip: 9 months full-time; 18 months part-time

You will take a taught component of four core courses alongside the work placement. For the MSc you will also complete a supervised research project of between 12,000 and 15,000 words.

The teaching segment provides great opportunities to build professional and personal relationships through seminars, fieldwork and self-directed or group projects.

What essential documentation should I have available before I start my application?

As well as completing your online application fully, it is essential that you submit the following documents:

  • A copy (or copies) of your official degree certificate(s)
  • A copy (or copies) of your official academic transcript(s), showing full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained
  • Official English translations of the certificate(s) and transcript(s)
  • Two supporting reference letters on headed paper
  • Evidence of your English Language ability (if your first language is not English)
