Summary biography:
Maureen Park is Lecturer in History of Art in the Centre for Open Studies (formerly DACE). She coordinates the Visual Arts programme and the Areas outside Glasgow programme for the Centre and is a member of the Social Justice, Place and Lifelong Education (SJPLE) Research Group.
Staff Profile
Maureen Park's research is cross-disciplinary, exploring links between visual arts, healthcare, medical humanities and adult education. As well as her lectures for the Centre, she also contributes to the teaching programme in the Colleges of Medicine, Arts and Social Sciences. She lectures extensively outside the university, including for the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and has delivered numerous conference keynote addresses. Her book, Art in Madness, on Dr W A F Browne's collection of asylum patient art at Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries in the mid-nineteenth century, was published in 2010. She has published in The Lancet, British Medical Journal and Medical Humanities. A former museum curator, she is also involved in museum and education research, contributing to education journals and books. She is currently involved in a Canadian/UK project on museum and library educators, led by Dr Darlene Clover and Dr Kathy Sanford, University of Victoria.
Maureen is a Director of Art in Hospital and a Trustee of Art Extraordinary and a founding member of the University of Glasgow's Medical Humanities Unit. She is contributing to the forthcoming Royal Edinburgh Hospital Bicentenary lecture series 2012-2013. Her current research is on the links between adult education, moral treatment, art activity and phrenology.
