Summary biography:
Nicola joined the School of Education in October 2020 as a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for the MSc/Med TESOL. From 2012-2020, she was a lecturer in TESOL at The University of Edinburgh, where she coordinated courses on curriculum design, Global Englishes and research methods. Nicola's research focuses on language teaching research and the globalisation of the English language, including within Higher Education. Her interests are situated within the field of Applied Linguistics. Her work has included attitudes towards English and ELT, Global Englishes, curriculum design for teaching English as an international language and English Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education. Publications include a number of books on Global Englishes, including Introducing Global Englishes (Routledge), Global Englishes and English Language Teaching (Routledge), Global Englishes for Language Teaching (Cambridge) and Teaching English as an International Language (Cambridge University Press - 2021). Forthcoming books on EMI include English Medium Instruction: a textbook (Wiley- Blackwell) and English Medium Instruction Practices in Higher Education: International perspectives (Bloomsbury). She has published my work in applied linguistics in journals such as Higher Education, TESOL Quarterly, ELT Journal, RELC Journal, System and Language Teaching.
She is engaged in consultancy projects with The University of Tokyo to develop two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on EMI and Global Englishes. I have been awarded an Invitational Fellowship for Research in Japan by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) to develop this work. I am a consultant for The British Council on various EMI projects and recently edited a literature review on EMI, which forms part of a position paper.
