Learning from the Hieroglyphics

Two pieces translated from hieroglyphics as food for thought for the weekend passed on by my colleague Dr. Angela McDonald, Subject Specialist and University Teacher - Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the Centre for Open Studies on the train home earlier in the week:

Exploring the Rehabilitation Methods of the Women Exposed to Domestic Violence at European Level

This is an EC-funded LLP Grundtvig Learning Partnership 

The 'WHO multi-country study' found that between 15–71% of women reported experiencing domestic violence. As a result, they may suffer isolation, inability to work, lack of participation in regular activities and limited ability to care for themselves and their children. From this point of view, rehabilitation of these women is crucially important.  With the help of this project 'Explore-Rehabilitate' designed by the partner institutions from 10 European countries, it is intended to examine the different methods of rehabilitation of these women at European level in order to see how the European countries could deal with the same problem and what the benefits of rehabilitation on women are.

In the first year of the project, all partners will examine the good examples about the rehabilitation of the women exposed to domestic violence in their own country. Then all partners will prepare reports and make a case study that describes the methods applied and how women are reintegrated into social life. These reports will be shared in the second transnational meeting. Meanwhile the project logo, poster, project web-site will be prepared and four project newsletters will be prepared and published. 

In the second year of the project, every partner will choose and apply one of these good examples in their own context.  The team will carry out peer meetings that will be an opportunity for each partner as they will visit the peer partner to see the good example they choose to apply. Finally, a project booklet will be prepared including the collection of the good practices. This booklet will constitute the final product of the project.

DISCUSS - European Platform for Communities of Practice in Lifelong Learning

DISCUSS is a project funded within the EC's LLP KA4 and is led by Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich with CRADALL and PASCAL at the University of Glasgow as partners along with Praxis und Wissenschaft GmbH (Germany), NEXUS Europe (Ireland), IDEC SA (Greece), MENON (Belgium), Observatory for Lifelong Learning (Romania), Information Systems Management Institute (Latvia)

EU member states over the past decades have promoted structural change in order to make their educational systems more flexible. More recently, national governments have started to decentralise the design and provision of adult education from the higher levels to local or regional governments, and to stimulate the building of local networks for lifelong learning. It is supposed that those networks are in a better position to react rapidly to changes and match learning needs with demands. Moreover, stakeholders on the micro-level are expected to bring learning closer to home but also closer to the situations in which it is applied (work, family, care, hobbies etc.). Learning cities and regions are supposed to take a key role towards the building of local capacities for lifelong learning. Consequently, the number of European cities and regions which coin themselves “learning ones” over the past years has constantly grown. However, there are significant pitfalls and constraints, which not only hinder the local networks to unlock their full potential, but significantly narrow down their effects and wider impact on society.

 

DISCUSS brings together stakeholders, experts and practitioners in lifelong learning in order to jointly find answers and identify solutions to the most urging issues and to improve the problem solving capacities of local networks for lifelong learning. However, it also takes the debate further and, in collaboration with local stakeholders will develop a roadmap towards the European Learning City | Region of tomorrow. DISCUSS will deliver analysis, good practice, future scenarios, a reader, policy recommendations, describing how to capitalize on the results and effectively transfer them into the practice of Learning Cities | Regions. Last but not least, DISCUSS aims to build long-term strategic partnerships, through permanent exchange mechanisms, such as exchange and mobility programs and the use of social web technologies for shared campaigns.

Professor Michael Osborne, Director of CR&DALL, presented at the 2013 Global HR Forum in Seoul in the strand entitled Lifelong Learning in the Centennial Era - For the Happy Third Age alongside Ian Baptiste Professor, Humanities and Social Sciences, St. George's University, Grenada, and discussants, Professor Heesu Lee, Dean, Graduate School of Global HR Development, Chung-Ang University and Professor Zunsang Han Professor, College of Sciences in Education, Yonsei University in a session sponsored by the Korean National Institute for Lifelong Learning (NILE). He was pleased to also be invited to a special session with young entrepreneurs.

International Study on Contemporary Educational Practices in Museums, Art Galleries and Libraries in Canada and Europe (SSHRC Canada)

A project led by Darlene Clover of University of Victoria and partnered by CR&DALL. The aim of this international development project is to create a strong collaborative base of researchers in Canada and Europe to explore these contemporary educational practices in museums, art galleries and libraries and their implications for building more inclusive, socially just and culturally enriched communities and societies. Collectively questions and research approaches will be developed to uncover evidence of best practices that can be widely disseminated to institutions and policy-makers.  PI: Maureen Park with Mike Osborne

BAGRu: Job relevant basic skills concepts and tools for groups facing particular challenges at the labour market
