I conducted in 1995-7 with a team from Education for Development an evaluation of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency's (SIDA) assistance to the Folk Development Colleges (FDCs) (report published); later, I reviewed the position of the FDCs (published 2013). This present report was compiled on the basis of visits to Tanzania and Sweden in 2017.
The Australian Journal of Adult Learning (AJAL) promotes critical thinking and research in the field of adult learning as well as the theory, research and practice of adult and community education. It has been published for over fifty years and covers a wide range of topics of interest to those in adult education.
This week research reveals increasing numbers of young people are moving back home with their parents, rural seniors are at increasing risk of social isolation and migrant groups moving to regional Australia are revitalising local communities. This week's ACE news is full of stories that highlight how adult and community education has a vital role to play in strengthening communities and helping people learn and adapt to change.
Three former professors of adult education, and the current chair, from the University of Glasgow were amongst some 100 friends and colleagues who celebrated the 80th birthday of Professor Peter Jarvis, the eminent adult educator, known to all in the field. Professor Lalage Bown, Emeritus Professor of Adult Education at Glasgow eloquently spoke of his contributions especially in the international sphere.
