CR&DALL Seminar 2013 Series:“The development of a network of learning cities and a learning city index: rationale, objectives and implications for a ‘Learning Town’ initiative"'

In recent years, several studies have shown that the creation of learning cities has become an effective instrument in promoting lifelong learning in the international community, despite various challenges. A nation aspiring to build a learning society or develop a lifelong learning system may use the names ‘learning cities’, ‘learning regions’ or ‘learning communities’ to mobilise or encourage their local authorities. To facilitate the development of learning cities in the international community, a truly global network of learning cities is needed.

Keeping up? Lifelong learning in Scotland - The MASON Project

This note explores data on Scotland’s performance in developing lifelong learning drawn from the MASON project, a research project from the EU Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-2013. The study allows Scottish performance on a set of composite indicators to be compared with that of other European regions.  It will also be instructive to look at Scottish performance in the light of the development scenarios identified recently by Scottish Futures Forum in their work on Scotland 2025: A Learning Nation.
