Nelson Mandela Day/The song for Madiba, Nelson Mandela, on his 94th birthday

On the initiative of the Scottish Trades Union Congress, the Scottish Government and ACTSA Scotland, this year saw the first marking of Nelson Mandela Day in Scotland. Recognised both in South Africa and internationally, Nelson Mandela's birthday has been declared a focus for community service of all kinds. In South Africa public figures are encouraged to join the wider community in 67 minutes of voluntary work to mark the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent in public service - including the 27 years he served in prison for opposing apartheid.

Lifelong learning driving universities’ ambitions? Dare we? Can we? Let’s! - U21 Lifelong Learning & Research Workshop

A U21 workshop on lifelong learning and research is being held at Glasgow in May 2012. Organised jointly by CR&DALL at the University of Glasgow and by the University of Auckland, New Zealand, the event is free and offers the opportunity for 'blue-sky thinking' with regard to the engagement role of universities.

The workshop will consider the possibilities of an 'entrepreneurial' approach to the place of lifelong learning research and development in the engagement activities of universities.
