30 academics from ten ASEM member countries participated in the research seminar organised by ASEM LLL Research Network 4 (RN4) at the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) from April 2-3, 2013.

The Seminar gave an update on RN4’s “White Paper Project” and ASEM researchers presented the reviews of National lifelong learning policies and strategies in their countries, including Australia, China, Germany, Japan, Latvia, the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Among others, Japan emphasised community learning, the United Kingdom mentioned the correlation between lifelong learning and life chances and Australia focused on lifelong learning, equality and livelihood.
Furthermore, the Network expressed strong interest in participating in joint research projects with UIL on lifelong learning policies and strategies and promoting collaborations between UIL and ASEM LLL Hub.

Policy and Practices

INNOVATION: THE WORLD NEEDS NEW SOLUTIONS

The ASEM Meeting of Ministers for Education has just launched a new programme for innovative competencies. Senior official Jørn Skovsgaard from the Danish Ministry of Children and Education tells us why the ASEM Education Process needs this new programme.
According to Jørn Skovsgaard, the world needs new solutions and hence new and unproven educational solutions. This calls in particular for a strong focus on how to improve the innovative capacities of all students and increase their potential to play an active role in their community. In all of this, it is important that both Asia and Europe learn from each other.
