Half a million tonnes of food waste every year!

News

Scotland annually discards more than half a million tonnes of food waste every year, much of which would be edible. At the same time, food insecurity remains a short term problem and a long term strategic issue over the globe. Across Europe, governments and local authorities have tried to address such problems with varying degrees of imagination, creativity and success.

A new trans-national project, involving partner organisations from Italy, Spain, Scotland, France, Belgium, Portugal, and Cyprus will shortly be established to examine and disseminate best practice across the whole of Europe. Entitled "Don't Waste Our Future", and led by a consortium of Italian local authorities, the project will be led in Scotland by the Education for Global Citizenship Unit (EGCU), based within CR&DALL at the University of Glasgow School of Education. In each Partner country, the different organisations will build links with schools (primary and secondary), local authorities and other civic organisations, leading towards a common European framework on strategies to reduce food waste and to promote knowledge, understanding and actions around global food security.

Further details will be posted in due course. The Principal Investigator at the EGCU for this project is Dr Alan Britton ([email protected])"
