The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning invites interested experts and the general public to a public talk on ‘Empowering female migrants and refugees through adult education’ on 26 March 2020.

The event will present a global picture of women’s participation in adult learning and education before taking a closer look at challenges in including female migrants and refugees in adult education in Germany.

The fourth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE 4) shows that in almost one-third of countries worldwide, fewer than five percent of adults aged 15 and above participate in education and learning programmes. In many countries, women are under-represented in adult education programmes. They find themselves deprived of crucial access to education, notably to vocational training, leaving them with few skills and poor chances of finding employment.

While Germany provides adult learning and education opportunities to all, a particular challenge remains to reach female migrants and refugees. Adult learning and education is an essential means for their integration into society and employment. However, many are still not included in adult education programmes and the job market and are, hence, deprived of chances for further development.

While 42 percent of male refugees participated in German classes in 2016, only 30 percent of female refugees did so, according to the latest available data by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. The majority (85 percent) of female refugees are highly motivated to seek employment but struggle to realize their ambitions for various reasons such as low levels of education, a lack of recognition of informally acquired qualifications, limited language knowledge and family obligations. The Hamburg Education Talk will address these issues together with key experts from Hamburg and discuss possible solutions.
