The Doctoral School in Humanistic Studies, Department of Human Sciences, University of Verona (Italy), invites applications for one PhD scholarship in Adult Education Policy. Further details below and attached:

The candidate who is awarded the scholarship must commence the PhD degree programme on 1 October 2016 and will be affiliated to the International Research Centre for Global and Comparative Policy Studies on the Education and Learning of Adults (IRC-GloCoPos) based at the Department of Human Sciences (read more at: http://www.dfpp.univr.it/?ent=bibliocr&id=246&tipobc=6&lang=it). 

This PhD scholarship is open for Italian, European and international applicants, and will be financed through the Research and Innovation action of the European Union, Call for proposals H2020-YOUNG-SOCIETY-2015, under the project: “ENLIVEN: Encouraging Lifelong Learning for an Inclusive and Vibrant Society” (Grant agreement no. 693989).

The ENLIVEN-project models how policy interventions in adult education markets can become more effective. It comprises 11 work-packages in 4 clusters. WPs1-3 examine programmes, governance and policies in EU adult learning, looking at the multi-dimensional nature of social exclusion and disadvantage. WP4 examines system characteristics to explain country/region-level variation in lifelong learning participation rates, with particular reference to disadvantaged and at-risk groups, and to young people. WPs 5-7 examine the operation and effectiveness of young adults’ learning at and for work, undertaking cross-country comparative institutional analysis. WPs 8-9 develop the knowledge base for, and develop and trials, an Intelligent Data Support System (IDSS) for evidence-based policy-making and debate (read more at: http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/200117_en.html)

The PhD project is carried out as a part of the ENLIVEN-project, and will center attention on European governance in adult education. However, the candidate who is awarded the scholarship will also be required to contribute to the overall project activities, including production of research publications and dissemination activities. 

The ideal candidate:

  • Has an expertise and/or strong interest in the fields of adult education, comparative education and education policy studies (an preferably, but not necessarily, in European governance in education)
  • Has or will gain an expertise in qualitative research methods
  • Is or will become familiar also with quantitative methods
  • Is fluent in spoken and written English
  • And possesses (at the least) a basic knowledge of Italian
