A giant step towards a right to lifelong learning! The Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII), hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco and UNESCO from 15 to 17 June 2022 in Marrakech, invited member states to translate the vision of a right to lifelong learning – with adult learning and education at its core - into reality.

Fifth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education launched at CONFINTEA VII
The main challenge for adult learning and education across the globe is to reach those who need it most. This is the key message of UNESCO’s Fifth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE 5), which was launched at CONFINTEA VII on 15 June 2022.

Making lifelong learning a reality: a handbook
Launched at CONFINTEA VII, the UIL Handbook provides information, evidence and basic conceptual models to facilitate the implementation of lifelong learning at national and local levels. It presents evidence from diverse initiatives and describes some of the contemporary issues to which lifelong learning responds – including how it shapes the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Transforming Education pre-Summit side event
Adult learning must be a central component for the transformation of education - that was the key message of a side event, hosted by UIL together with the Kingdom of Morocco, at the Transforming Education pre-Summit in Paris on 29 June 2022. Ministers from different world regions discussed CONFINTEA VII outcomes and the implementation of the Marrakech Framework for Action to fully harness the power of adult learning and education for sustainable development.

Online courses and webinars
New online course on family and intergenerational literacy and learning
To further strengthen the capacities of family literacy facilitators and educators, UIL and the Commonwealth of Learning have just launched a second online course. It presents theoretical concepts, showcases activities and materials for family reading, writing, numeracy and other learning areas, and explains opportunities for further professional development.

Call for applications: Capacity-building workshops for lifelong learning policy-making
UIL, in collaboration with Shanghai Open University (SOU), calls for applications by UNESCO Member States for its capacity-building courses on lifelong learning policy-making. Country teams – involving policy-makers and leading researchers – are asked to signal their interest no later than 31 July 2022 for the next course, starting in November 2022, and further courses in 2023.

Lifelong learning for health webinar
On 7 September, UIL and the UNESCO Chair Global Health and Education (GHE) will co-host the webinar 'Spaces, institutions and actors: Towards a health learning pathway for all' as part of a series aimed at developing a roadmap for the enactment of the Yeonsu Declaration for Learning Cities, adopted at the fifth International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC 5) in October 2021.

This report presents the results of a global survey administered by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) on the contribution of universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) to lifelong learning (LLL). It was conducted with the aim of developing a knowledge base on how and to what extent HEIs contribute to the implementation of LLL.
