News

Here we have the latest ‘round up’ from the Brimbank Learning Community through it’s newsletter “Celebrating Learning”. Brimbank is a council area on the north-west fringes of Melbourne (Australia), and its current Community Learning Strategy can be obtained through the contacts provided within the Newsletter.

There are rich ideas that range across all ages in engaging constituents in lifelong learning. Libraries have been learning hubs central to the initiatives throughout suburbs and activities can be further discovered at their particular websites. Please see what is happening to uplift aspirations and learning engagement among representative groups: from educational support volunteers, student wellbeing, theatre performance training for youth, to vocational development for parents as teacher aides. Go through to the Research & Resources section. Brimbank is strongly linked into the work of Adult Learning Australia.

Opportunity for Volunteering with Ardoch Education Programs

Recruiting for Education Support Volunteers – Ardoch Youth Foundation Ardoch provides education support for children and young people experiencing disadvantage. Education volunteers provide assistance in early childhood settings, primary and secondary schools which can include literacy, numeracy and well being support.

Adult Learning Australia (ALA) summit: Towards a national lifelong learning policy for Australia

The rising bar: Rising education and skill levels are creating a more competitive job market.

38% of young people whose parents were born overseas were in some form of tertiary education in 2016. This compares with 25% of young people whose parents were born in Australia.
Only 45% of university students born outside Australia find full-time employment after graduation, compared with 69% of Australian-born university students.
Young people in Australia are more highly qualified but less likely to find a job than previous generations. Refugee and migrant young people face additional challenges, even though they may come from families who strongly value and promote educational success.

New Services Offered by the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman

The Commonwealth Ombudsman can now investigate complaints about the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Student Loans program and VET FEE-HELP scheme. If you, or someone you know, has an issue or complaint regarding your VET FEE-HELP or VET Student Loans training provider please contact the Commonwealth Ombudsman.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman can also investigate complaints about problems that intending, current or former overseas students have with private schools, colleges and universities.

The ARACY 2018 Report Card

In 2017, for the first time in the survey’s history young people identified mental health as the most important issue in Australia today. Concerns about mental health have doubled since 2015 and tripled since 2011. Other top issues of national concern included alcohol and drugs and equity and discrimination.
