The UNESCO Chair on Global Adult Education of the University of Malta has just concluded a seminar on this important anniversary. It was a half-day celebratory event with a variety of presentations and discussions. Some of the participants like Marjorie Mbilinyi and Budd Hall met and worked with Julius Nyerere while he was President of the United Republic of Tanzania, others were close to him and his involvement via the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) as he was its first Honorary President, and later became posthmous a member of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame (IACE). Looking through the five major writings related to education then "Education for Self-Reliance", "Education Never Ends" and "Adult Education and Development" contributed much to what we see in the discourse on the human right to adult learning and education as well as lifelong learning. In the event Julius Nyerere was also well remembered as a leader of the anti-colonial-movement in his country and of the non-alignment-movement globally.
