While UNESCO has long promoted MIL, its application in adult learning has been underrepresented. To address this, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), in collaboration with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy and Digital Competencies Unit and with financial support from Shanghai Open University (SOU), has developed a comprehensive self-learning course for adult educators. This course equips adult educators to combat misinformation and harmful online content by fostering critical thinking and digital literacy, promoting informed and active digital citizenship.
In today’s fast-paced digital world, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is essential for navigating complex media environments, evaluating information credibility, and engaging responsibly with digital media both in society and at home.

On Thursday, 7 November 2024, UIL will host a webinar titled ‘Media and Information Literacy for Adult Educators’ to mark the global launch of this new course. The event will highlight the vital role of MIL in adult education, offering educators practical tools and strategies to promote responsible media engagement among adult learners. International experts will discuss current trends, research, and innovative practices in MIL, while participants engage in interactive discussions on applying MIL principles across various adult education settings.
This launch aligns with the UNESCO Global MIL Week 2024 theme, ‘The New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public-Interest Information’. The webinar is open to adult educators, researchers and all stakeholders involved in adult learning and education who want to enhance their understanding and application of MIL.
