Conference announcement and Call for Abstracts/Posters: Join us in Edinburgh for our Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain (PESGB) branch conference in celebration of the centenary of Dewey’s Democracy and Education (1916).

John Dewey’s statement that democracy is not just a political system, but also a “mode of associated living” has inspired philosophers and educators to think seriously about critical issues surrounding living together in inclusive, pluralist, and just societies. Academics, practitioners, students, teachers in schools, and policy makers are invited to discuss questions concerning the relationships between education and democracy today.

Leonard Waks, Prof. Emeritus Temple U. and President of the John Dewey Society

Liz Jackson, Assistant Professor, Hong Kong University

Christine Doddington, Senior Lecturer in Education, University of Cambridge

Steven Fesmire, Professor of Philosophy and Environmental Studies, Green Mountain College

Call for Abstracts:

The conference invites papers for themed panel sessions which address the conference topic in the context of one of four themes (below). Note: Papers do not need to centre on Dewey’s work.   

  1. Social justice, inclusion, and citizenship education
  2. Sustainability and Environmental education;
  3. Learning spaces/environments, including online learning
  4. Teaching, Learning, and Teacher education

Call for Posters (For Doctoral students only)
