Election 2016

Today we are launching ALA's innovative advocacy campaign targeting candidates across the country in the lead up to the Federal Election on July 2. Our campaign's objective is for increased awareness of the challenges faced by Australians who struggle with low levels of literacy and numeracy in their daily lives.

Candidates will be asked to pledge their support for the 'not for profit' adult and community education sector in addressing this important issue. When a candidate takes the pledge, it will be shared via social media and ALA's website.

We encourage members to pledge their support as well. And, if you can’t see your local candidates on our honour wall, ask them to get on board to show their commitment to the ACE sector.

Party positions

We have asked the major parties for a statement outlining their position in relation to ALA’s policy platform. To date, only the Australian Labor Party have responded, and you can see their response here. All responses to this request will be published as they become available.

Minister and Shadow Minister meetings

On 11 June, ALA's President Chris McCall and Vice President Trace Ollis met with the Shadow Minister for Vocational Education, Hon Sharon Bird MP. The meeting was very productive and confirmed Ms Bird's support for the ACE sector, recognising its key role in addition to TAFE.

Our next meeting is with the Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, Senator the Hon Scott Ryan on Tuesday 21 June. This will be an excellent opportunity for ALA to discuss our policy platform and to reinforce the value of the ACE sector across Australia.

All meeting outcomes will be shared via ALA's social media channels and the website.

ASQA meeting outcomes

The ASQA/ALA consultation was held in Sydney on 7 June, and attended by representatives from QLD, NSW and Victoria. A number of issues were raised with the Chief Commissioner, Mr Chris Robinson – including the increased cost of course re-accreditation for programs such as Volunteer Community Adult Literacy Tutoring. Further consultation will now be undertaken to seek assistance to reduce these costs.

Queens Birthday Honours

Congratulations to Dorothy Lucardie and Adjunct Professor Barry Golding who have both been awarded Order of Australia Medals. Barry Golding was recognised for his dedication to men's learning and wellbeing, and Dorothy Lucardie was recognised for her outstanding service to adult education in Australia.

Both Barry and Dorothy are former ALA Presidents and recently retired as Board members.

On a personal note, Friday, 24 July will be my final day as CEO at Adult Learning Australia. I have decided to move on to pursue other career opportunities. My time at ALA has been an invaluable journey leading a respected peak association with a vibrant history supporting and advocating for adult learning and community based education in Australia.

I understand that recruitment for a new CEO will take place over the next few months. In the interim, please address all matters relating to the national office to [email protected] or call (03) 9689 8623.

Stephen Dunn
Chief Executive Officer
