Adults learn in significantly different ways to children and adolescents, yet many of the approaches that are commonly taken by educators are based on principles of child development. The challenge for teachers of adult learners is to develop curriculum and pedagogy that meets their distinct learning needs.

One of the unique aspects of adult learners, unlike younger students, is they bring existing knowledge, skills and experiences into the classroom. Adult learners often have insight into their own learning needs and their learning is frequently self-directed and purposeful. Teaching adult learners requires an approach to teaching that engages adults in learning that is practical, or sometimes referred to as applied learning.

This webinar will introduce participants to Malcolm Knowles’ theory of andragogy - an approach to teaching that draws on the humanist and constructivist traditions of teaching and learning. The aim of this webinar is to introduce participants to:

•     Principles of adult learning
•     Understanding the adult learning classroom
•     Problem posing discussion as a tool for teaching
•     Practical case studies for engaging adult learners
•     Easy strategies for using adult learning principles

This webinar is aimed at people who are new to teaching adults or who want to refresh their thinking about adult learning. It will include practical tips for facilitating courses and classes with adults.

Dr Tracey Ollis [PhD Victoria] is a lecturer in Adult, Vocational & Applied Learning at Deakin University, her research focusses on critical pedagogy and adult education in workplaces and lifelong learning, in Adult & Community Education (ACE) and community settings.

Tracey has more than 20 years experience teaching adult learners in TAFE, ACE and HIGHER education settings.
