News

The Andy Furlong PhD Scholarship, designed to honour our late colleague and friend, Professor Andy Furlong*, has been won by James Gulgecer for his research proposal Zones of in/security in the UK youth labour market.

The research will include building on the work in Andy’s last book Young People in the Labour Market: Past, Present, Future. Written with our own Stuart Hall and Kevin Lowden, together with John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor, Sarah Hadfield and Réka Plugor, the book was published posthumously in 2017. James, who graduated from Glasgow with a distinction for his Master’s in Educational Studies in 2016, will be supervised by Dr Lesley Doyle (School of Education, Prof Bridgette Wessels (Sociology) and Prof Melanie Simms (Adam Smith Business School).

*Andy Furlong, Professor of Social Inclusion and Education in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow and Dean of Research for the College of Social Sciences, sadly passed away on 30th January, 2017.
