Professor of Data Science position at University of Glasgow

The collection of personal and other data underpins modern social, economic and organisational life. With the rise in social media, communications platforms, deployment of robotics, big data analytics, AI, the Internet of Things, and autonomous vehicles, further major social, economic and cultural developments are predicted across all areas of social and economic life.

Data science extends the reach of social scientists to consider the new forms of data being produced and offers new tools for deriving knowledge, notably more exploratory, theoretical and/or data-driven approaches to data analysis. The developments in data science and the impacts of digital technologies on society more broadly are themselves a focus of a growing body of social science research. Novel forms of data and associated analytics bring a variety of new societal, economic, ethical, educational, regulatory, theoretical and methodological challenges.

The social sciences and humanities have a strong role to play in the development of challenge-led, interdisciplinary research in data science, and we welcome applications from researchers with expertise in a number of areas. The following I summarises our interests in the School of Education.

Evidenced-based decision making for system change and improvement in Education

Developing further the School’s expertise and innovation in utilising large data sets, the School is focused on advancing methodological expertise and rigorous research in data science to inform and influence policy making and professional practice across education systems. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Ellen Boeren, Director of Research ([email protected]).
