I am very sorry to have to report that Professor Peter Jarvis passed away on 20th November 2018 after a long illness. There can hardly be anyone in the field of adult education who has not heard of Peter or read his work. He was probably the most well-known academic in the field, and a larger than life figure who lit up many conferences around the world both academically and socially.
Since the news was relayed by his wife Maureen and by his long-time colleague, John Holford, many warm messages have been exchanged around the world. He was viewed in high regard by all that knew him. I was very pleased that I was able to visit him at his house in Thatcham, Berkshire and to spend a lovely afternoon with Peter and his family not so long ago, and in 2017 together with many from around the world was there to share a special birthday.
When we met, he was very pleased to be able to discuss a doctoral thesis of one of my students. Although he could no longer examine at that point, he still cherished the fact of being asked to do so. Here is a photo of Peter with that thesis and with one of his very typical smiles. He will be sorely missed by many. My sincere condolences to Maureen and the rest of his family.
