Welcome to the Scholarship Project newsletter

The project so far...
Update from John Lea, Scholarship Project Director
This newsletter coincides with the halfway point for the funded part of the Scholarship Project. I have composed a think piece in the form of a mid-term report where I explore and ponder on the journey so far.

Elsewhere in the project, following a review of the policies and practices in our
46 colleges, we analysed the data and produced a set of recommendations to help further embed scholarly practices. We are working with senior staff at the colleges to trial these recommendations and to determine how they might be incorporated into the final framework. The final framework will also include some of the trial and test proposals that the colleges involved in the project are currently working on.

We have had some proposals to trial and test ideas on digital scholarship and this is the focus for this newsletter. Digital scholarship is an imprecise term, which seeks to capture not just the use of digital technology to enhance learning in general, but also to enhance our understanding of how digital tools can be utilised to promote various forms of scholarly activity amongst staff, students and employers, working in partnership. Some of the current work and thinking in this area is showcased below.

Why does digital scholarship benefit college HE?
In exploring the answer to the question of why digital scholarship benefits college HE, we need to look not only at how staff and students scholarly practice can be enhanced by use of digital technologies, but also the spaces and platforms where this might occur.

Gloucestershire College, South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and Hereford College of Arts

explore this topic further in their case study on the digital scholarship of teaching and learning.

Adding a digital dimension to scholarly activity

In a world that relies so heavily on technology, is it important that scholarly research should adapt to embrace this?

Jisc is an organisation that supports the FE and HE sector in digital solutions and services. Jisc's Regional Officer Christa Appleton, argues for the need for digital technologies to be included in the college HE scholarship development debate and provides some useful references that can inform the discussion.

Overview of the CAIS app as a tool for reflection
Another form of digital scholarship is using technology to enhance the reflective practice of undergraduates. This is a video and written case study featuring Pete Holmes, lecturer and programme leader of the BA (Hons) Physical Education and Sport Coaching programme at Doncaster College and University Centre Doncaster.

Within these, he discusses his experiences with the iPad application CAIS (Coach Analysis Intervention System) that has been developed by Axis Coaching Technology, and is at the forefront of current coach behaviour research.

Pete discovered this technology whilst undertaking his PhD and has utilised the technology substantially with his students over the last 18 months. The video highlights how he has done this, its impact, plus ideas for future implementation.

Keeping up with the Scholarship Project

We now have case studies, including video case studies. Share what's happening in your college by submitting a case study.
