Radical Community Work

A new journal devoted to exploring radical community work practice will be launched later in the year. 

In the run up to the launch the editors are looking for active participation from the field (practitioners, activists, academics). There are three things you may wish to contribute:

Useful websites?

Here are few websites which have been recently notified to me and which may be of interest  to some of you.

Honor

  • Engaging with Massive Online Courses - An iinteresting paper from academic staff based at Stanford University. It will be presented at WWW 2014 (23rd International World Wide Web Conference) and is currently available for download from arxiv.org.   Includes a useful literature review of studies on how students engage with MOOCs.  It also shows that giving students incentives such as badges increases engagement.

  • MITx Working Papers from Harvard MIT and which has analyse the impact of the first year of the courses.
  • Alt-ed is a good blog to keep up to date with initiatives relating to MOOCs

Penny Enslin 'Measuring up in Education' in Melbourne

Professor Penny Enslin was a keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia, December 2013, and here is seen with Professor David Beckett of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

Writing with Mary Tjiattas of North Carolina State University, Penny’s presentation made a case for measurement that avoids feedback loops that corrupt what they set out to measure, with reference to metrics of justice that foster global educational opportunity.
