I was invited to speak to the 4th Global Forum on Lifelong Learning, Suwon, Korea, June 2016. This gathering of 600 people drawn from government, academia and practice was organised by Gyeonggi Institution for Lifelong Learning (GILL). It launched in December 2011 and aims to promote lifelong learning for citizens in Gyeonggi province by providing a range of programmes, supporting community initiatives and developing a learning ecosystem.
My theme was Lifelong Learning and the Quality of Social life where I outlined an approach which was both holistic and rooted in notions of practice and social justice.
Another key speaker was Sampo Suihko, Deputy Mayor and Head of Education and Cultural Services Espoo Finland which, according to a new study, Espoo is the most sustainable city in Europe. He outlined the developments in Espoo as a learning city, including how local curricula for schools was being developed through a dialogue between teachers, pupils and parents.
Gyeonggi Province has a population exceeding 12 million people, 20% of the population in Korea, making it it the largest local self-governing body in in Korea.
I was thrilled by the warmth of the welcome and hospitality I received whilst in Suwon and enjoyed my experience of the architecture and culture. I was encouraged to see the enthusiasm and commitment of politicians, academics and practitioners to developing lifelong learning that supports social change. The common themes, issues and aspirations that we share are an excellent foundation for mutual learning, working and support.
