Impact of socio-cultural backgrounds on trajectories

The Céreq has just released a video based on the publication "When education has finished".

In 2 minutes, the video is showing key facts about educational trajectories of the young people in the 2013 cohort and how they were very significantly influenced by their socio-cultural backgrounds.

  • A quarter of the children of blue-collar workers have higher education qualifications, compared with three quarters of those whose fathers have cadre status. Young people from migrant backgrounds are more likely than the others to leave the education system with nothing more than the lower secondary leaving certificate.
  • Thus 17% of the children of parents born abroad left school with no other qualification than the lower secondary certificate, compared with 14% of all young people.

At Céreq's premises in Marseille, South of France.

What?

Representatives of the German Federal Institute for Vocational Training BIBB) and Céreq met to think about joint research projects.

This meeting, which brought together Hubert Erti, Deputy President and Head of Research at BIBB and Florence Lefresne, Director of Céreq, was an opportunity to renew the bilateral collaboration between the two institutes and to propose new bases for joint comparative research studies over the next two years.

At the XIX ISA World Congress of Sociology held in Toronto in July 2018.

What?

Arnaud Dupray and Dominique Epiphane presented a paper as part of a session entitled "The Work/Family Challenge In Intensive Work Contexts". Their paper drew on a preliminary analysis of two specific extensions of the third wave of Céreq's Génération 2010 survey:

  • The characterization of individuals in managerial occupations.
  • The share of domestic and parental tasks within couples.

Twinning project between Morocco and France

Rabat, Morocco.

What?

From Wednesday, June 6 to Friday, June 8, Céreq researchers Mickaële Molinari and Christophe Guitton went to Rabat to conduct a training course on: "The analysis of work, prospective analysis on jobs and school-to-work transition". This three-day training course focused more specifically on two themes:

  • School-to-work transition through the lens of the Céreq Generation surveys.
  • Prospective analysis of occupations and qualifications.

The public was composed of Moroccan officials from operational directorates of ministries (education, higher education, labour), statisticians, economists, sociologists and econometricians.

These presentations designed to be operational were a great opportunity for rich exchanges on the themes, the stakes and the methods.

Employment instability and economic uncertainty have increased in many industrialized countries in the last two decades, giving rise to perceived employment insecurity among workers. It has been shown that perceived job insecurity (PJI) significantly modifies economic behaviours such as saving, consumption and entry to further education, reduces job performance and generates adverse health and well-being effects.
