BALID will host an Informal Literacy Discussion entitled "Keep safe, stay well: health literacies “ring the bell”.

The Covid-19 pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020, means that health information, for individuals and for communities, is essential. Important advice about protection must be easily accessible, and it must be appropriate for each community. Speakers from Afghanistan and South Sudan will lead us in discussion and reflection on local literacies and health.

Adult Learning and Education in the era of Covid-19: the view from the UNESCO Global Alliance for Literacy

Ian Cheffy of SIL International and our BALID Treasurer contributed the latest BALID blog post. He examines the role of the Global Alliance for Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning which specifically exists to promote action in the countries facing the most severe challenges in youth and adult literacy.

COVID-19 and Adult Learning and Education project update

Since October last year, BALID has been leading research on the impacts of COVID-19 on adult literacy provisions in Afghanistan, the Philippines and the UK. The country teams are now in the middle of data collection – interviewing adult literacy facilitators, learners and managers to gain insight on how their work and experience have been evolving due to the pandemic. The team is looking forward to sharing the results when ready! In the meantime, read more about the project here and the research partners, UNESCO Chair in Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation, Transformare in the Philippines and the Afghan National Association for Adult Education. This project is funded by the British Association for International and Comparative Education seedcorn grants.

And finally, we'd all like to congratulate to our BALID Chair, Christopher Millora, who successfully defended his PhD dissertation entitled ‘Exploring the learning and literacy dimensions of local volunteering by youths and adults in the Philippines: an ethnographic study’.
Chris was supervised by Professor Anna Robinson-Pant, UNESCO Chair in Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation and a long-time supporter and friend of BALID, Professor Alan Rogers, BALID President, and Dr. Catherine Jere, lecturer in education and international development at UEA.
