Call for expressions of interest in a PhD scholarship at RMIT

Expressions of interest are sought from appropriately qualified researchers for consideration for a PhD scholarship (Australian Postgraduate Award or International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, equivalent in value, duration and conditions) to support researcher/s to join a larger project related to higher education policy, with a focus on doctoral education in Australia, the SE Asian region, or Africa; or comparative work across these regions.Possible projects for the doctoral researcher might include:

  • Critical policy analysis of the place of the doctorate in HE policy and Research and Innovation policy in Australia or nations in the SE Asian region; or in the policy frameworks of global agents such as World Bank, Asian Development Bank etc. This work could be a single HE system study, or a comparative study. SE nations of particular interest are Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. African nations of particular interest include sub-Saharan countries.
  • Comparative outcomes of overseas- and locally-educated PhD graduates in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.  Similar outcomes work focused on selected African countries. This comparative work could measure career outcomes, employment, research productivity, etc. of locally and overseas educated graduates.
  • Other research ideas related to the above themes generated by applicants, the research should have a policy analysis component but may combine this with other research approaches (such as interviews etc.).

The scholarship is to be taken up at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia to commence in 2016. Duration of scholarship is 3 years with a possible extension to 3.5 years.

The Senior Supervisor of the PhD project is Professor Denise Cuthbert, Associate Supervision will be determined by the nature of the project.

Next steps?

  1. Prepare an expression of interest (EoI) which should comprise two documents, being a:
  • research proposal outlining your proposed research question, methodology, brief review of relevant literature and a statement about the anticipated impact and significance of the research; and

  • CV of no more than two pages outlining your academic qualifications, relevant experience, any publications and the name and email of one academic referee.

  1. Submit your EoI to [email protected] by no later than 31 August 2015. Please use the subject line: EoI Global Doctoral Policy Project.
     
  2. EoIs will be assessed promptly and selected applicants will be encouraged and assisted to apply for a scholarship in the 2016 round (for study commencing in 2016) which closes on 31 October 2015.
