We are pleased to share with you the first Connect-VET electronic newsletter showcasing activities between Vocational Training Organisations and SMEs.
Gender-role stereotypes are barriers to women trying to access education, choosing the course they want to study (for example, nursing versus engineering) and participating in lifelong learning. And in the job market, salaries, promotion opportunities and professional development all reflect gender inequalities.
The British Psychological Society’s response to the publication, Making Work Better: An Independent Inquiry into Working Life in Britain, has been submitted to the Smith Institute with CR&DALL Affiliate, Renée Bleau as lead author.
The present publication is one of the outcomes of the OBSERVAL-NET project (follow-up of the OBSERVAL project). The main aim of OBSERVAL-NET was to set up a stakeholder-centric network of organisations supporting the validation of non-formal and informal learning in Europe based on the formation of national working groups in the 8 participating countries of the project. Each national working group worked towards bringing together key stakeholders in VNIL and political decision-makers at national level in order to coordinate policy implementation in the field.
After a 14 month cross-sectoral consultation process, Scottish Cabinet Secretary Mike Russell officially launched a Statement of Ambition for Adult Learning in Scotland. Ambitious in scope and vision, it proposes that 'adult learning in Scotland will be recognised by all as a central element of personal and community empowerment' (p.6). Adult learning is framed as lifelong, lifewide and learner-centred, and the three stated ambitions are:

To reduce high unemployment among their young people, countries are looking to others for help. In countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands and Austria youth unemployment has remained relatively low. This is attributed in part to their apprenticeships or ‘dual’ systems and so interest in them has increased.
Many of you were at the event in Newbattle Abbey College that launched the draft statement of ambition. You will also be aware that I advised you earlier this year that the cabinet secretary wanted to launch the final paper in Adult Learners’ Week.
