CR&DALL Director for Europe, Mike Osborne, and PASCAL Associate Director for Europe, Roberta Piazza, were delighted to be hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Learning (SMILE) and its director Professor Jian Huang from 15-18 March 2018. During that time, they discussed a number of areas of potential collaboration including assessment of the regional engagement role of Technical and Vocational Education Colleges in Shanghai.

The Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Asia and Africa (SUEUAA) project team were delighted to welcome Professor Caroline Knowles, Programme Director of the British Academy’s Cities and Infrastructure Programme, this week for a meeting in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow. This year, the British Academy’s Global Challenge Research Fund (Cities and Infrastructure) funded 17 projects across the UK, all of which looking at aspects of how to create and maintain sustainable and resilient cities in developing countries, of which SUEUAA is one*.
The skills agenda has been growing in the UK, strengthening the focus on youth skills given the raise of youth unemployment. So far, most of the analyses on the governance of skills system and the skills (mis)matches have been addressed at the national level.
I’m happy to announce the publication of the new issue of RELA with the theme: social economy and learning for a political economy of solidarity. The issue includes five thematic papers and two open papers, featured and available for download below.
On Sept 15th and 16th 2017, we were delighted to host at the School of Education, University of Glasgow, Professor Rajesh Tandon, the founder-President of PRIA, global participatory research & training centre based in New Delhi, India. PRIA has completed 35 years of work in empowering citizens to claim their rights and organize their own communities. Professor Tandon has also been the UNESCO Co-Chair on Community-Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education since 2012.
We are very pleased to announce that Dr Mia Perry has been successful in winning a new project funded under the aegis of the GCRF AHRC-MRC global partnership grants. The project concerns ensuring the sustainability of a public health palliative care project in Bangladesh through community theatre.
The consultation seeks views on the independent review of student support in further and higher education in Scotland, chaired by Jayne-Anne Gadhia. The review and consultation takes place in the wider context of Scottish Government ambitions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the post-16 learner journey and work on Widening Access.
Three former professors of adult education, and the current chair, from the University of Glasgow were amongst some 100 friends and colleagues who celebrated the 80th birthday of Professor Peter Jarvis, the eminent adult educator, known to all in the field. Professor Lalage Bown, Emeritus Professor of Adult Education at Glasgow eloquently spoke of his contributions especially in the international sphere.
