Muir Houston helps Romania celebrate Lifelong Learning Day

I was recently invited to attend Lifelong Learning Day (26th April 2014), part of the University of Bucharest’s 150th anniversary celebrations in Bucharest, Romania. This was then followed by the 4th International Conference on Adult Education: "Adult Education in Universities. Local and Regional Perspectives" (27th – 30th April 2014) held at Iasi, Romania.

A full programme was put on for Lifelong Learning Day by our hosts at the University of Bucharest including Professor Romita Iucu and Associate Professor Catalina Ulrich. Adrinks reception was held on the Friday evening for networking and introductions for attendees at the lifelong learning event.

On the Saturday, Honorary Professorships were conferred upon Professor Heribert Hinzen (Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association IIZ/DVV) and Professor James Pappas, Vice-President of Oklahoma Outreach. An interesting and thought-provoking roundtable discussion was held on "University and Lifelong Learning", taking stock and looking ahead.

In the evening our hosts had arranged for us to visit the Ballet at the Opera National to see a performance of Corsarul and it was certainly an interesting spectacle.

Sunday the 27th saw us move to Iasi, in Moldova, for the 4th International Conference on Adult Education hosted by the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi.  A full programme was delivered and there was a diverse range of presentations and large variety of international contributors. I delivered a presentation on two EU funded projects we have been involved in (THEMP and LETAE) and was also invited to be a panellist on a number of roundtables and discussions on: Universities’ support in building strong learning communities and regions; Adult Education in Universities; and, International Doctoral programs - creating synergies.

In addition, one of our CR&DALL and PASCAL colleagues, Professor Chris Duke (above left, with Muir Houston) was inducted to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. Also honoured at the event was a former colleague Professor John Field.

Self-motivated participation in learning activities increases the well-being of adults

Non-vocational adult education drawing on a person’s own motivation comes with a variety of benefits that are also reflected on the person’s close friends, family and work. Studying boosts self-confidence and well-being, and expands social networks. Furthermore, motivation to pursue other studies also increases. Thanks to participation in adult education, tolerance towards and confidence in other people grows, and adult learners pay increasing attention to their health. Parents are better able to support the studying of their school-aged children.

Revision of the UNESCO Recommendation on the 1976 Development of Adult Education

http://uil.unesco.org/uploads/pics/20140526ExpertMeeting.jpgUNESCO will revise the 1976 Recommendation on the Development of Adult Education, as recommended by the Belém Framework for Action. UNESCO’s General Conference agreed in 2013 to prepare this revision “in consultation with the Member States and other stakeholders through various cost-effective measures”.

Validate to Co-operate - Final report of the OBSERVAL-Net project

The present publication is one of the outcomes of the OBSERVAL-NET project (follow-up of the OBSERVAL project). The main aim of OBSERVAL-NET was to set up a stakeholder-centric network of organisations supporting the validation of non-formal and informal learning in Europe based on the formation of national working groups in the 8 participating countries of the project. Each national working group worked towards bringing together key stakeholders in VNIL and political decision-makers at national level in order to coordinate policy implementation in the field.

Actions of Lifelong Learning addressing Multicultural Education and Tolerance in Russia

We are pleased to announce a new collaborative project involving EU partners and a number of Russian universities, to support higher education modernisation in Russia, and the development of HEIs as lifelong learning centres. The project is being led at the University of Bologna, and at the University of Glasgow, the Principal Investigator is Dr Stephen McKinney, Head of the Research and Teaching Group in Creativity, Culture and Faith.
